What if DC citizens could make the federal government more responsive to all citizens and help popular ideas move through a dysfunctional process? Two Senators from DC would break the gridlock and allow the Senate to function as it should. •The Supreme Court, •the Department of Justice, •the filibuster, •gun regulations, •women's bodily autonomy, ...and more must pass through the Senate, where DC (a state's worth of U.S. citizens) has no representation. We're told the Constitution demands this—it does not. I propose we stop asking politely, taking "no" for an answer, then sitting down and waiting for the stars to align. Even when they do, Statehood gets put on the “back-burner”, bargained away, or undermined by defectors. It's time to change our strategy for attaining statehood from a quiet battle on Capitol Hill to a bold, creative, and urgent demand presented to the entire nation and its judicial system. We must end this dictatorial relationship between Congress and the citizens of our nation's capital.
